Reading Dr. Suess

As a part of Read Across America, we read aloud from Dr. Suess’ The Cat in the Hat – on the 50th Anniversary of it’s publication! We discussed the character of the cat and the character of the fish. The cat was a joker, the life of the party who didn’t care at all for the rules. The fish was the conscience who kept reminding the children ”their mother would not like it not one little bit!” Can you think of two other characters in books or movies who portrayed these archetypal roles, the jokester and the voice of reason?

The movie i am thinking of is the newer version of cat in the hat. They were having fun with the cat, but then they realized they totally wrecked there house! When there mom came home she was very upset with both of them.
The only movie I can think of is the Cat in the Hat remake. The cat was trying to teach them to have fun. They had fun but destroyed the house. There mom was mad. The fish tryed to warn them but they did’nt listen. The movie was great. But they did get in trouble.
The cat in the hat is like the movie Pinocchio. The cat is like Pinocchio and the fish is like Jiminy the cricket, because Jiminy is Pinocchio’s conscience. The fish is like a conscience, unlike the cat. The cat likes to have fun and so does Pinocchio.
I enjoy Dr. Suess books there are very humorous.The Cat In The Hat was one of the best books he ever made.The movie is funny
Two other characters that I think of who portrayed the traits of the conscience [good] and the jokester [bad] are Gandalf the White and Sauron the Dark Lord. Those characters are from the trilogy The Lord of the Rings. I think that Gandalf is the conscience because he is the main good guy and he gives people wisdom to do the right thing same as the fish. I think that Sauron the Dark Lord is the jokester because he is the main bad guy so he has lots of minions that he created to try to destroy the race of man and get the one ring back.
Another two characters that I think fit the description are Jedi Master Yoda and Darth Sidious from the saga of Star Wars. Yoda is the conscience who is the main good guy who gives other people advice and help on their problems. And Darth Sidious is the jokester because he is the main bad guy who gets and alliance with the trade federation to kill the jedi and without given any clue to his true intensions.
In The Cat in The Hat The Movie, the little girl is like the concience and her brother is the one is is always fooling around and doesn’t care about anything.
The only characters that come to mind are in the movie Finding Nemo. Marlin, Nemo’s dad is like the conscience because he is always worrying about something or someone. Dory is the joker; she doesn’t really care about what people think about her or what she does.
The movie that is like these characters is What About Bob? Bob is a guy that is free and his doctor is uptight and hates fun.
Besides Cat and the fish from The Cat In The Hat, two other characters are from a TV show. They are Zach and Cody from The Suite Life Of Zach and Cody on Disney Channel. Cody, like the fish actually has structure and Zach, like Cat just wants to have fun.
The Cat in the Hat reminds me of The Lion King. Simba is the cat always getting in to trouble and Zazoo is like the Fish who is always worring.
When I think about conscience and jokers the only characters I think about are the characters from the tv show Rugrats!! Tommy is a jokester and loves to explore new things like the cat. But Chuckie doesn’t like to get in trouble and alaways stayes back and warns the others about the conquences!!!
The only other book I can think of is Pinnochio having no clue about what to do. Like the cat in the hat wanting to party. Jimminy being the voice of reason like the fish in cat and the hat.
I think Dr.Suess is an American hero. With out Dr. Suess some kids would have never learned how to read.
In Garfield, John keeps putting Garfield on diets so he will lose some weight. John is kind of stopping the eating party of Garfield. In every book Garfield will still get food to eat so his party of food will keep going.
I sometimes watch a television show known as “Curb Your Enthusiasm” which stars the former Seinfeld producer Larry David. Larry has famous friends, a huge house, a loving (and way too forgiving) wife. In this comedy show Larry is a total victim of misunderstandings and he’s always in the wrong place at the wrong time. Larry’s wife Cheryl Hines (in the show) is always giving Larry helpful advice to help minimize the trouble that has been caused by him. But, Larry’s manager Jeff Garlin gives Larry the wrong tips all the time. The worst part is, when he’s right, Larry doesn’t listen to him! Basically, Jeff represents the Cat in the Hat and Cheryl is definitely the fish.
A movie where there was a jokester and the voice of reason was “The Lion King” because Simba and Nala were the jokesters (who always got into trouble) and Zazu who was always the party pooper (who took control and ruined their fun).
In the “EPIC MOVIE”, even though the movie isn’t a serious movie, the jokester is the movie was the blonde hair guy. The serious one was the one girl who was trying to trying to go home and they are also trying to hide from the Willy Wonka guy!!!
A show that I have to say that relates to The Cat in the Hat is Rugrats. In the show Tommy is always looking for something to get into and Chukie is always saying I don’t think that is a good idea. So in opinion the cat is Tommy and the fish is Chukie.
A character named Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter is the jokester. He is always playing jokes on Harry and his gang, Draco also is always trying to get them in trouble. Then you have Hermione who is like the conscience always telling them this is not such a good idea and always warns Harry and Ron when she thinks they are doing something that could get them into trouble.
The movie that comes to mind is Finding Nemo because when Marlin wouldn’t let Nemo swim freely like he wanted to. This made Marlin like the fish and nemo was trying to have some fun.
One movie that shows a different kind of way for a joker and the voice of reason is Madagascar. In this movie the zebra wants to go away from the zoo and explore the world because he misses being out in the wild. The lion Thinks its best for them to stay because it’s the best thing they’ve every had and he doesn’t wont the zebra to mess it all up. So he tries to make him see that they need to stay here because its were they belong.
The movie I think of when I think of the cat in the hat is you me and dupree because the dupree dude is wild, and his friend is like a fun sucker.
The characters that relate the most to the characters in the “Cat in the Hat” are from “Finding Nemo”. I think that because Dory is the joker and Marlin is the conscience. Dory just swims around like its nothing and does not care, but Marlin is stricter and worry’s too much. Just like the fish in the “The Cat in the Hat”. An Dory relates to the cat.
The books that Dr. Suess made are really cool. Especially that one book The Cat and the hat. I really like that book because you can take that book in so many different directions.

A movie that reminds me of this is Cars because Towmater is the jokster and Lighting mcqueen is the conscience.
The movie character that comes to mind that reminds me of the cat in the hat is every movie. In every movie there is joker and there is always a conscience.
Another book or movie that was like “The Cat in the Hat” is “The Lion King”. The King was always telling Simba not to go to the graveyard because of the dangers but he went anyway. He did learn from his mistakes though.
