Shakespeare’s Sonnet #18
Posted on May 21, 2007 by Mrs. Albanese
I cannot allow May and you to slip away from me without one really wonderful experience with a Shakespeare Sonnet! Go to http://www.shakespeare-online.com/sonnets/18.html
Read the sonnet and then explore the form, the author and the analysis given. Look at other Shakespeare sonnets. Find one you like and post it on your blog making your own comments: what is the theme, content and your opinion? Finally, in the comment section of this post, reflect on what you think of Sonnet #18. What was Willie Shakespeare up to when he said ” summer’s lease hath all too short a date”?

I don’t really understand this poem. It confuses me quite a bit. I think that if I lived in the same time as him I might understand it a wee bit better. For now it is just confusing.
To be honest, i don’t understand Shakespeare’s sonnets. He talks as though we live in the 1500s. If we did, i’d proably understand his poems better but when he says: or lose possession of that fair thou owest; i do not know what heis trying to say. This poem is very confusing to me. The most i can get out of it is that he’s talking, maybe comparing, man to May. And i don’t undertsand the point of this.
i tnink the the poem was very nice.
I think it is just another poem and I feel the same way that I do about every other. They are just peoples feelings on a piece of paper.
SONNET 144
Two loves I have of comfort and despair,
Which like two spirits do suggest me still:*
The better angel is a man right fair,
The worser spirit a woman colour’d ill.
To win me soon to hell*, my female evil
Tempteth my better angel from my side,
And would corrupt my saint to be a devil,
Wooing his purity with her foul pride.
And whether that my angel be turn’d fiend
Suspect I may, but not directly tell;
But being both from me, both to each friend,
I guess one angel in another’s hell:
Yet this shall I ne’er know, but live in doubt,
Till my bad angel fire my good one out.*
i really don’t understand what this poem is talking about. maybe if i was where the poet was when he was writing it, I might of understood it a little better
I thought it was a very good poem but i didn’t really give me the shazam i was looking for such as a erection or a nibblet aka hard nipples
I really don’t understand it either. It is very confusing.
I think that sonnet#18 was really confusing. I didn’t really understand it. But i think that he is talking about how awsome the month of May is.
i thought the poem was very good and i didn’t really understand the term he used. It appered vauge to me
Shakespears poems are inspiring and must drive people to want to write. They are lovely and it’s hard to belive someone backthen could write like that
I don’t rally understand this poem. it confuses me.
I thought it was an ok poem, but it didnt get my attention because the words the author used were really big and boring. I like little words that are easier to understand, like the words Dr. Suess used.
I really don’t understand what he’s saying
this poem is very good. I liked it b/c it has comparasens i can understand.
I think the poem was for more of the fans of Shakespeare. I just like poems that aren’t so hard understanding and this poem is real hard for me to understand but other than that it’s an okay poem.
I thought this poem was pretty interesting, except i really dont get it maybe if i was an old person i would get it.
I think this poem is beautiful and really sweet.
I thought that the poem was great. I like the way that he use a young lady to describe summer. It’s just amazing how he uses the similarities between the young lady and summer
I think the poem is very good.
I really didnt understand the poem but the only thing that I knew was that he was talking about the summer.
I think the poem was great.
I think that the poem was great. Personaly, I do not read poetry, but the description and language in this was amazing. I am looking forward to reaing more of his work.
I didn`t find it all that amazing
I really didn’t like the poem and I didn’t understand this poem I thought it was boring and I don’t like reading things like poems because they make me tired.
I think Shakespeare thought a lot about this poem but i can not really understand it
I think Shakespeare thought a lot about this poem but i can not really understand it.
I dident like it. I’ll admit it was well written, but it dident appeal to me.
To tell you the truth i have no idea what i have just read it looked like awhole bunch of scrambled words in my head. But maybe thats because i dont like poetry or sonnets
Love is my sin and thy dear virtue hate,
Hate of my sin, grounded on sinful loving:
O, but with mine compare thou thine own state,
And thou shalt find it merits not reproving;
Or, if it do, not from those lips of thine,
That have profaned their scarlet ornaments
And seal’d false bonds of love as oft as mine,
Robb’d others’ beds’ revenues of their rents.
Be it lawful I love thee, as thou lovest those
Whom thine eyes woo as mine importune thee:
Root pity in thy heart, that when it grows
Thy pity may deserve to pitied be.
If thou dost seek to have what thou dost hide,
By self-example mayst thou be denied!
The poem didn’t quite wet my whistle, I understood the first line and that was about it. His poetry may have made sense back then but defiantly not now. Maybe they should make a more up to date Shakespeare for beginner poem readers like me. Or replace the big confusing words with my modern day language. Over all it was didn’t grab me like I thought it was going to. Nice try Willie, Better luck next time.
Willie, he’s a funny man. But I just don’t think that his poem clicked in my mind as much as Langston Hughes, but obviously back in those days it clicked in everyone’s head. He’s just not my type any more. I like more modern day poets. He’s just not cutting it. Okay in the long run I just didn’t understand this poem at all. It was not good either. It didn’t grab me like it was planed to. I’m sorry but it didn’t. Maybe in the future.
When I’m more mature and understand more about this stuff. But now it’s just not cutting it.
It blows!
I thought the sonnets were confusing to read. I think they need to be updated it to today’s slang.
Sonnet 18 was confusing but it had a good message to convey. It took me a while to understand what William was trying to tell me. I look forward to reading more of Shakespeare’s sonnets.
I think that sonnets were very good, they were very poetic, and the way the words are used i can see the events in my mind!!!
I think that the poem was cool because i love poems about summers
Kick A++ Poem
Kick A++ Poem
Nice Poem
Shakespeare definitely put a lot of thought into his sonnet. It certainly takes a while to compare anyone to a Summer day. As all the others said, if it was updated a little bit more, I would have appreciated to a much higher level than I do now. But I can’t blame him for being in the time period he wa born in!
I don’t really understand this sonnet becaus of all the old world language like thee I think that i means the.
I think it is a nice poem if you can understand it. And a Kick A++ poem like chris says

You Wrong For That

The setting for the book You Wrong For That was in Denver, Colorado. The setting of this story was about a young girl named Rhea was married to a man named Marcus. At first there relationship was going well until Marcus cheated on her and they had got a divorce. Then she found a new man named Davis Hickman. They were dating for a very long time and they thought they were meant to be. Then one day she had gotten pregnant. When she got pregnant all of the truth came out. He had 2 other kids that Rhea didn’t know about and he also had the 2 baby moms staying and coming over all the time. At first that caused a lot of problems but then it didn’t matter to her anymore. Then she went to visit her family in Haiti and got into a car accident. At the scene of the car accident she had her babies and she didn’t really want to be around Davis anymore. The part of the book that touched me the most was when Rhea was pregnant and she was on her way to visit her family in Haiti. Her boyfriend Davis Hickman was suppose to go with her but something went bad and he couldn’t come and he didn’t even tell her that he wasn’t going. She was very upset and frustrated. While she was driving she was thinking about everything that went wrong and she closed her eyes not paying attention to the road. At that very moment everything went bad. She went off the road and her car flipped several times and the only thing that she remembered was her waking up in pain. Then some people road by and stooped and helped her and right then and there she delivered her twins and wasn’t none of them was hurt. That was the part that touched me the most.
A lesson that this book taught me was to be more careful and prepared about that choices that you make in life. It has also taught me to choose men wisely and not just by there looks. Out of all the books that I read this year I have to say that this was my favorite book. This book was really the only book that I read and actually paid attention to it. I really like this book because the things that she went through in this book is things that could actually happen in real life and I also like it because the lesson it taught me and how I will try to keep that lesson in consideration. The type of book that I will like to read this summer are the books that I am reading now. They are actually fiction but the things that happened in this book are things that could happen in real life and are things that are actually happening in real life.
