Honoring Your Mom

Last week in class you wrote a special descriptive poem about your mother or the special woman in your life who cares for you. Then you printed them out on flowery paper and carefully placed them in a page protector. Now I am curious. How did it go when you gave her the poem? Did [...]

Bullying Poem by Naomi

Bullying
By Naomi
(This beautiful poem was written by an eighth grade student in response to the recent discussions in class.)

Bullying is a horrible thing,
Kicking,
Hitting,
Name-calling,
Anything to be cool.
Backstabbing,
Blackmailing,
Taunting,
Those people don’t belong in school.
One time,
Two times,
Five times,
Ten Times,
When will it stop?
It doesn’t stop,
It will never stop,
Because bullying is everywhere.
You try not to fight back,
But in the [...]

Reading Dr. Suess

As a part of Read Across America, we read aloud from Dr. Suess’ The Cat in the Hat – on the 50th Anniversary of it’s publication! We discussed the character of the cat and the character of the fish. The cat was a joker, the life of the party who didn’t care at all for the rules. The [...]

Zooming Along

Skating along next to my students was more fun than a wheelbarrow full of jello!  So I go to thinking about the freedom and fun of skating. What other things that you do give you freedom and fun?  What activities give you a lift and a bit of joy? Think about all seasons of the [...]

Math Anyone?

Today the entire school will take a practice DSTP math test. Since this is such a departure for me from Language Arts, I am asking you to describe your relationship with math. How do you use math in your life and what do you think of math as a subject? What can you tell me [...]

Speaking of Poets!

This week I revealed my absolute respect and admiration for Maya Angelou. We looked at two of her poems and talked about the metaphors and poets/writers tools. Write to tell me what you thought of her poems.  Tell me what was her message to youth and her message to persons who live in a “cage”.

I Know Why [...]

Winter Break

This is the day before our winter break. I am curious to know what you are looking forward to doing, seeing, participating in this upcoming break. We just read the short story The Gift of the Magi – so in the spirit of giving,  please share a story from a holiday when you were a child [...]
